How iTutorOnline verifies tutors

Verification is the one thing worth comparing carefully between tutoring platforms, because the same word covers wildly different amounts of work. Here is what iTutorOnline states it checks, what that establishes, and where a deeper standard adds something.

Published by TutorDeluxe, which operates a different verification standard. Not an independent review. The description of iTutorOnline's process below is taken from its own public statements; the comparison is ours.

What iTutorOnline states it checks

iTutorOnline states that every tutor is ID-verified, describing tutors as "manually ID-checked by our team", and that "diplomas and credentials" are "manually verified too". Payments are processed through Stripe. At the time of writing it reports 762 manually verified tutors.

Two features of that are worth noting positively. The checks are described as manual rather than automated, which is meaningfully more work than document-scanning software. And they cover credentials as well as identity, which a significant number of volume marketplaces do not attempt at all.

  • Identity — manual ID check by the platform team
  • Credentials — diplomas manually verified
  • Payments — processed via Stripe
  • Reported scale — 762 manually verified tutors

What those two checks establish, and what they leave open

An identity check answers a narrow question well: the person is who the document says. A credential check answers a second: the stated qualification exists and is held by them. Together they close off the most common forms of misrepresentation, and they are the right two checks to start with.

What they do not address is conduct and competence. Neither check reveals whether a tutor has actually taught anyone, whether the experience on the profile happened, or whether someone who supervised them would work with them again. A person can be exactly who they say, hold exactly the degree they claim, and still be an unsuitable tutor — and no identity or diploma check will surface it.

Where the TutorDeluxe standard goes further

We require eight checks before publication, and a tutor appears only once all the required ones pass: pre-screening, identity, qualification, experience, at least one contacted reference with a structured recorded outcome, profile consistency against verified evidence, the €40 minimum rate, and country-specific child-safety documentation where a lawful and current check is available and relevant.

Three of those are the real difference. Experience verification checks that the claimed teaching history happened rather than accepting it as declared. The reference check means a human at TutorDeluxe speaks to someone who worked with the tutor and records the outcome. Consistency review compares the public profile against the verified evidence, so unverified titles, impossible promises and misleading affiliations do not reach publication.

That process does not scale. It is why our directory is a fraction of the size, and why the cost sits on tutors as a one-time €199 fee rather than on families per lesson.

What no platform can claim

Two limits apply to both services and to everyone else in this market, and any platform implying otherwise is overstating what it knows.

First, no verification predicts future conduct. Checks establish identity and history; they are not a safety guarantee, and in the EU a guarantee of child safety is precisely the kind of trust claim that attracts scrutiny. Annex I of the Unfair Commercial Practices Directive prohibits displaying a trust mark without authorisation and claiming approval or endorsement without meeting its terms.

Second, criminal-record checking does not cross borders. A DBS check covers England and Wales; Scotland and Northern Ireland operate separate systems; every other country has its own. International providers assemble checks country by country rather than running one global search. For a platform operating across Europe, that means safeguarding evidence is necessarily uneven, and describing it otherwise would be inaccurate.

Questions worth asking either platform

These apply to us as much as to anyone, and a platform that does the work answers each in a sentence.

  • Which checks are required for a listing, and which are optional?
  • Are qualifications confirmed with the issuing institution, or from an uploaded image?
  • Do you contact references yourselves, and do you record the outcome?
  • On what date was this specific tutor last reviewed?
  • What do you explicitly not check?

Common questions

Does iTutorOnline check references?
Its public material describes manual ID verification and manual diploma and credential verification. We have not seen a public statement that references are contacted, so we cannot say either way — it is a fair question to put to them directly.
Is manual verification better than automated?
Generally yes, for credentials. Automated systems are good at matching a face to a document and poor at judging whether a certificate from an unfamiliar institution means anything. A person reading the document catches things software does not.
Does either platform run criminal-record checks?
Neither can do so universally, because these checks are national and usually requested by an employer rather than an individual. TutorDeluxe reviews country-specific child-safety documentation where a lawful and current check exists and is relevant, and does not claim clearance where none was performed.
Is a smaller verified directory safer than a large verified marketplace?
Not automatically. A small directory with deep checks and a large marketplace with shallower checks are different risk profiles, not a ranking. What matters is knowing which checks were actually performed before you make the decision.

Every tutor here has been reviewed.

We verify identity, qualifications, experience and references before a profile is published. Students and parents pay nothing, and we take no commission on lessons.
