A-Level Biology tutors
A-Level Biology has more content than any other science and is rarely failed on content. It is failed on precision of language, on data analysis, and on answering the question that was asked rather than the one the student prepared for.

Structure and the volume problem
Biology is linear after the 2015 reforms: all examinations at the end of the second year, with AS-Level standing alone and not contributing to the A-Level grade. Grades run A* to E with U for unclassified, regulated by Ofqual, with specifications from AQA, OCR, Pearson Edexcel, WJEC/Eduqas and CCEA.
The volume is genuine and the response to it is usually wrong. Students attempt to hold everything in memory and revise by rereading, which produces recognition rather than recall. Retrieval practice — attempting to produce the answer before checking — is substantially more effective per hour, and moving a student from rereading to retrieval is often the single biggest change a tutor makes.
Where marks are lost
Terminology is first. Biology mark schemes are specific: "diffusion" and "facilitated diffusion" are not interchangeable, and neither is "gene" and "allele". Students who write approximately correct answers score approximately nothing on those marks.
Data and statistics questions are second. A-Level Biology papers include substantial data interpretation — reading graphs and tables, evaluating experimental design, interpreting statistical tests. This is a distinct skill from content knowledge and needs separate practice, which it rarely gets.
Application to unfamiliar contexts is third. Papers routinely present a study or organism nobody has met and ask students to apply principles to it. Students who learned examples rather than principles have nothing to transfer.
Fourth, command terms: explain, describe, suggest, evaluate and compare each demand a different structure, and answering the wrong one wastes accurate content.
- Precise terminology, in the mark scheme's vocabulary
- Data and statistics practised as a separate skill
- Principles learned so they transfer to unfamiliar contexts
- Answer structure matched to the command term
What to look for in a tutor
Ask which board they teach and whether they have examined for it. Then ask how they would approach a student who revises constantly and still scores in the middle bands — the answer reveals whether they diagnose or simply deliver content.
A good A-Level Biology tutor spends comparatively little time explaining biology to a hardworking student and comparatively more on retrieval practice, precise phrasing and past-paper data questions. If the proposed plan is to go through the syllabus again, more slowly, it is unlikely to change anything.
Timing and cost
Because the main gains are technique rather than content, biology tutoring works well in short concentrated blocks and can be effective later in the course than chemistry or physics. A block in the final two terms focused on data questions and answer structure is a reasonable intervention even for a student starting late.
That fits the evidence on one-to-one tuition, which favours short, regular sessions over a defined period of up to ten weeks and reports roughly five additional months of progress on average.
Expect roughly €45 to €100 an hour — generally the least expensive of the three sciences, because the supply of qualified biology tutors is larger. TutorDeluxe charges students nothing and takes no commission.

Common questions
- My child revises for hours and scores in the middle bands.
- Almost always a revision-method problem. Rereading notes produces familiarity that feels like knowledge and does not survive an exam question. Switching to retrieval practice and past-paper work under timed conditions usually moves the grade faster than more hours.
- How much maths is in A-Level Biology?
- More than students expect — a defined proportion of marks assesses mathematical skills, including statistics, ratios and data handling. Students who chose biology to avoid mathematics are often surprised, and it is a common hidden cause of underperformance.
- Is biology enough for medical school?
- Rarely on its own — most medical schools require chemistry, with biology commonly required or strongly preferred alongside. Requirements vary by country and institution, so check the specific courses being applied to.
