UCAT tutors
The UCAT is not a knowledge test and cannot be revised for like one. It assesses aptitude and attitude rather than academic achievement, under time pressure severe enough that pacing strategy is most of the score. That makes it unusually responsive to good tutoring — and unusually wasteful of bad tutoring.

What the test actually contains
The UCAT comprises three cognitive subtests plus a behavioural one, and the timings are the defining feature.
Verbal Reasoning allows 22 minutes for 44 questions across 11 passages. Decision Making allows 37 minutes for 35 items using syllogisms, logic puzzles, Venn diagrams and probability. Quantitative Reasoning allows 26 minutes for 36 questions based on tables, charts and graphs. Situational Judgement allows 26 minutes for 69 questions across 22 scenarios. The whole sitting runs up to about two hours, or two and a half with accommodations.
Work out the per-question budget and the nature of the challenge becomes obvious: Verbal Reasoning allows roughly 30 seconds per question including reading the passage. No candidate answers every question carefully. The skill being assessed includes deciding what not to attempt.
- Verbal Reasoning — 22 minutes, 44 questions, 11 passages
- Decision Making — 37 minutes, 35 items
- Quantitative Reasoning — 26 minutes, 36 questions
- Situational Judgement — 26 minutes, 69 questions, 22 scenarios
How scoring works
Each of the three cognitive subtests is scored between 300 and 900, giving a combined cognitive range of 900 to 2700. In the UK version, the Situational Judgement Test is reported in Bands 1 to 4 rather than numerically, while the Australia and New Zealand variant scores it 300–900.
Most UK, Australian, New Zealand and Singaporean medical and dental schools require the test, and it is taken in a window running from July to September for the following year's entry. In 2025 roughly 41,354 UK candidates and 16,950 ANZ candidates sat it.
Two implications follow. First, because scores are compared against a large cohort in a single cycle, marginal improvements in pacing translate into meaningful percentile movement. Second, because there is one sitting per cycle, preparation timing is not flexible — a plan that peaks in October is worthless.
What good UCAT tutoring looks like
The useful work is strategy and timing, not content. A good tutor teaches triage — recognising within seconds which questions to answer, which to guess and flag, and which to abandon — and then drills it until it is automatic under pressure.
They should also work subtest by subtest, since the optimal strategies differ sharply. Verbal Reasoning rewards locating information rather than comprehending passages. Quantitative Reasoning rewards on-screen calculator fluency and estimation. Decision Making rewards recognising question archetypes. Situational Judgement rewards understanding the professional framework being assessed, which is closer to learnable content than the other three.
Be sceptical of anyone selling large numbers of hours. The test rewards deliberate practice on a candidate's specific weakness, identified from timed mock data. A tutor who does not begin by looking at subtest-level mock results is guessing.
Timing and cost
Preparation typically runs six to eight weeks before the sitting, with the test taken between July and September. Starting much earlier tends to produce fatigue and a plateau; starting much later leaves no time to convert strategy into automatic behaviour.
The evidence on one-to-one tuition — short, regular sessions of around 30 minutes, three to five times a week, over a defined period of up to ten weeks — maps onto UCAT preparation almost exactly, which is unusual among the things families buy tutoring for.
Expect roughly €60 to €150 an hour. Admissions-test specialists price above subject tutors because the pool is small and the window is compressed. TutorDeluxe lists tutors from €40 an hour, charges students nothing and takes no commission.

Common questions
- Can you actually improve a UCAT score with tutoring?
- Yes, but through strategy and timing rather than content. Candidates who begin without a pacing plan typically improve substantially once they have one, then hit a ceiling. The gain is real and it is front-loaded.
- How long should preparation take?
- Six to eight weeks of consistent work is the common pattern, with the test taken in the July-to-September window. Longer preparation tends to plateau rather than continue improving.
- Does the Situational Judgement Test band matter?
- Yes, and how much varies by medical school — some treat Band 1 as a threshold requirement while others weight it less. It is also the most learnable section, because it assesses a professional framework rather than raw aptitude.
- Should we use a tutor or a question bank?
- Both, in that order of dependency. Question banks supply volume; a tutor supplies diagnosis of why particular questions are being lost and what to change. Volume without diagnosis mostly rehearses existing habits.
