IB Chemistry tutors
IB Chemistry rewards students who can connect three representations of the same idea — the molecular picture, the symbolic equation and the numerical answer. Most students who plateau have one of the three missing, and identifying which is the first job of a good tutor.

What the course demands
Chemistry is a Group 4 subject, with Higher Level requiring a minimum of 240 instructional hours and Standard Level 150. The HL extension is not simply additional topics: it deepens treatment of energetics, equilibrium and organic mechanisms to a level where memorised patterns stop working.
Assessment splits between external examinations sat in the May and November sessions and internal assessment, which contributes between 20% and 50% of a subject grade across IB subjects and is teacher-marked with IB moderation.
The topics where grades are actually decided
A small number of areas account for most of the grade separation. Moles and stoichiometry underpin everything and are rarely secure enough: students who are approximate here lose marks across unrelated topics for the rest of the course.
Organic chemistry fails when it is memorised as a list of reactions rather than understood as mechanism. Students who learn reagent-plus-conditions pairs cope until asked about an unfamiliar substrate, at which point there is nothing to reason from.
Energetics and equilibrium are where conceptual misunderstanding hides most successfully, because plausible-sounding wrong explanations earn partial credit at SL and none at HL. And bonding — particularly intermolecular forces — is where students confidently write answers that are subtly incorrect, usually confusing bond strength with intermolecular attraction.
- Stoichiometry — insecure foundations that surface everywhere
- Organic — memorised reactions rather than mechanisms
- Energetics and equilibrium — plausible but incorrect reasoning
- Bonding — intermolecular forces confused with covalent bond strength
What to look for in a tutor
Ask how they would find out whether a student's difficulty is conceptual or mathematical, and listen for a method rather than an assurance. Chemistry problems frequently present as content gaps and turn out to be arithmetic or rearrangement gaps.
Ask about internal assessment experience specifically. The common IA failures in chemistry are design failures — an investigation with insufficient range, a variable that cannot actually be controlled, or an analysis that does not support the research question — and they must be caught early, because they cannot be written around afterwards.
Confirm they teach the current syllabus. Group 4 specifications have been revised, and a tutor working from an older one will weight topics that have shifted or gone.
Timing and cost
Chemistry is cumulative, which makes early intervention unusually valuable: a student insecure with moles in the first term will keep paying for it until it is fixed. If there is a choice between help now and help later, chemistry argues strongly for now.
Evidence on one-to-one tuition points to short, regular sessions over a defined period — around 30 minutes, three to five times a week for up to ten weeks — rather than open-ended weekly hours. A practical pattern is a concentrated block to repair foundations, then a lighter block for internal assessment, then exam technique.
Expect roughly €50 to €110 an hour, with HL and examiner-experienced tutors at the top. TutorDeluxe charges students nothing and takes no commission.

Common questions
- My child understands chemistry but cannot do the calculations.
- Common, and usually a mathematics problem wearing a chemistry costume — rearrangement, ratios, unit conversion and significant figures. A tutor who diagnoses this correctly can often resolve it in a handful of sessions.
- Is IB Chemistry HL harder than A-Level Chemistry?
- They are differently demanding. HL covers comparable depth with a broader assessment structure including internal assessment, while A-Level concentrates everything into terminal examinations. Students who dislike sustained coursework often find A-Level suits them better.
- How early should IA support start?
- At the design stage, before any data is collected. Most lost IA marks trace to an investigation that could not have earned them regardless of how carefully it was executed and written up.
