IB Physics tutors

IB Physics punishes students who can recall physics but cannot deploy it under exam conditions, and it puts an unusually large share of the grade into coursework produced long before the examinations. Both facts should shape how you use a tutor.

What the course demands

Physics sits in Group 4 of the Diploma Programme. Higher Level requires a minimum of 240 instructional hours against 150 at Standard Level, and the additional HL material is conceptually harder rather than merely longer — students who coped at SL pace often find the HL extension the point at which understanding has to become genuine.

The mathematical load is the other discriminator. IB Physics HL taken alongside Mathematics Applications and Interpretation SL is a demanding combination, because the physics assumes algebraic fluency the mathematics course does not prioritise. Where a student is struggling with physics, it is worth establishing whether the actual obstacle is the mathematics.

Where students lose marks

The internal assessment is the largest single recoverable opportunity. Internal assessment contributes between 20% and 50% of a subject grade across IB subjects, is marked by the teacher and moderated by the IB. In physics the common failures are structural rather than experimental: an investigation with no genuine independent variable, uncertainty analysis treated as decoration, and a conclusion that restates results instead of evaluating them against theory.

In the examinations, marks concentrate in a few predictable places. Definitions are asked precisely and answered loosely. Graph questions reward extracting gradients and intercepts with units and uncertainties, which students routinely omit. Extended-response questions require explanation in physics terms rather than description of what happens.

Data-based questions are where strong students most often underperform, because the skill being tested — reading an unfamiliar experiment and reasoning about it — is not the skill practised when revising content.

  • Uncertainty and error analysis treated as an afterthought
  • Definitions recalled approximately rather than precisely
  • Units and significant figures dropped in graph work
  • Describing rather than explaining in extended responses

What to look for in a tutor

Ask whether they have supervised or moderated IB physics internal assessments. That single question separates tutors who know the subject from tutors who know the assessment, and for IB the second matters more than families expect.

Ask also how they handle the mathematics. A good IB Physics tutor diagnoses whether a problem is physical or mathematical before teaching, because the remedies are entirely different. And confirm they are teaching the current syllabus — the Group 4 subjects have been revised, and tutors working from older specifications will emphasise content that has moved.

Timing and cost

Two high-value windows exist: the internal assessment period, where structural advice changes a mark that is otherwise fixed, and the final two terms, where data-response and extended-response technique can be trained directly.

The evidence on one-to-one tuition favours short, frequent sessions over a defined block — roughly 30 minutes, three to five times a week, for up to ten weeks — rather than an indefinite weekly hour. For physics specifically, frequent short sessions working through past data-response questions tend to outperform long content-review sessions.

Expect roughly €50 to €110 an hour, with HL specialists and former examiners at the upper end. TutorDeluxe takes no commission and charges students nothing, so the advertised rate is the total.

Common questions

Can a tutor help with the physics internal assessment?
Within the IB's academic honesty rules, yes — helping a student design a viable investigation, understand the assessment criteria and evaluate their own analysis. They cannot produce the work, and a tutor who offers to should be declined.
My child is fine at physics but scores badly. What is going on?
Usually a mismatch between knowing content and meeting assessment requirements — imprecise definitions, missing units, describing rather than explaining. This is among the most tractable problems a tutor can address, often within a few weeks.
Does IB Physics HL require Mathematics AA?
Not formally, but the combination of Physics HL with a lighter mathematics route creates real friction. If that is the situation, mention it when looking for a tutor — it changes who is suitable.
