IB Mathematics tutors

IB Mathematics is four different courses wearing one name. Before looking for a tutor, establish which one your student is taking — the mismatch between route and tutor is the single most common problem families bring us.

Four courses, not one

Since the 2019 syllabus revision, IB Mathematics splits into Analysis and Approaches (AA) and Applications and Interpretation (AI), each offered at Higher Level and Standard Level. That produces four distinct courses with different content, different emphases and different examinations.

AA is the more traditionally pure route, weighted toward algebraic manipulation, calculus and proof. AI is oriented toward modelling, statistics and technology use. AA HL is generally regarded as the most demanding of the four and is the usual requirement for engineering, mathematics and physics degrees; AI SL is the lightest.

Mathematics sits in Group 5 of the Diploma Programme, so every candidate takes one of these four. Higher Level subjects require a minimum of 240 instructional hours and Standard Level a minimum of 150 — a substantial difference in pace that matters when judging how far behind a student actually is.

  • Analysis and Approaches HL — algebra, calculus, proof; the most demanding route
  • Analysis and Approaches SL — the same emphasis at reduced depth
  • Applications and Interpretation HL — modelling, statistics, technology
  • Applications and Interpretation SL — the lightest of the four

Where IB Mathematics students actually lose marks

Three patterns dominate, and only one of them is about not understanding the mathematics.

The first is the internal assessment — the mathematical exploration. Internal assessment accounts for between 20% and 50% of a subject grade across IB subjects, is marked by the teacher and then moderated by the IB. Students routinely choose explorations that are too broad, too derivative, or mathematically too thin for their level, and then cannot recover the marks regardless of how well they write it up. Choosing the topic well is worth more than polishing the final draft.

The second is Paper 3 at Higher Level, an extended problem-solving paper that rewards sustained reasoning rather than recall. Students who can execute standard techniques confidently often stall here because the questions do not announce which technique they want.

The third is calculator technique. Both routes assume fluency with a graphical display calculator on specific papers, and marks are lost to inefficiency and to solving by hand what was meant to be solved by machine.

What to look for in an IB Mathematics tutor

Ask which of the four courses they teach, and expect a precise answer. A tutor who says "IB maths" without specifying route and level has probably not taught it recently.

Beyond that, the useful qualifications are specific: experience supervising mathematical explorations, familiarity with the current syllabus rather than the pre-2019 one, and comfort with the calculator models your school uses. A strong university mathematician with no IB experience will know the mathematics and not the assessment — and in the IB, the assessment is most of the battle.

  • Names the exact route and level without prompting
  • Has supervised or marked mathematical explorations
  • Teaches the post-2019 syllabus, not the legacy one
  • Can work with the student's graphical display calculator

Timing and cost

IB Mathematics support is most valuable earlier than families expect. The exploration deadline in the first half of the second year is a fixed, high-leverage point: a few hours of well-timed help on topic choice changes a component mark that is otherwise very difficult to move later.

Evidence on one-to-one tuition favours short, regular sessions over a defined period — around 30 minutes, three to five times a week, for up to ten weeks — rather than an open-ended weekly hour. For IB, a practical adaptation is a concentrated block around the exploration, and a second block in the final term for Paper 3 technique.

Expect roughly €50 to €120 an hour. AA HL sits at the upper end because the pool of tutors genuinely comfortable with it is small. TutorDeluxe lists tutors at a minimum of €40 an hour and takes no commission, so the rate you see is the rate you pay.

Common questions

How do I know which IB maths course my child takes?
It will be written on their school report or subject selection form as Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, followed by HL or SL. If a tutor does not ask this in the first two minutes of conversation, that is informative.
Is AA HL really harder than AI HL?
It is generally treated as the more demanding route, and is the usual requirement for mathematics, physics and engineering degrees. AI HL is not an easy course — it is a different one, with heavier statistics and modelling content.
Can a tutor help with the mathematical exploration?
Yes, within the IB's academic honesty rules. A tutor can help a student choose a viable topic, understand what the criteria reward and review mathematical correctness. They cannot write it, and any tutor offering to should be declined.
When should we start?
Before the exploration is chosen, if the goal is the best return per hour. Starting in the final term limits the work to exam technique — valuable, but a narrower intervention than it needed to be.
